Purton BungalowWiltshire Leisure Village is offering large bungalows (with a garage) to retirees who want space

The Wiltshire Leisure Village in Royal Wootton Bassett plans to add five new luxury bungalows, measuring up to 3,000 sq feet each, to its collection of retirement properties at its site at The Wiltshire Golf and Country Club.

Jennifer Shah, development director, said: “I read there were no more bungalows being built.

“That’s wrong at a time when people retire earlier, live longer, need good active facilities and still need easy-access space without being crammed into small rooms and flats and a lonely TV set.

“They also need rooms for their family and friends to visit whilst keeping some spare space to store meaningful items they collected through their lives.”

Jennifer-Shah-Wiltshire-LeisureJennifer, with her husband and business partner Eddy Shah, decided to change 10 of their-soon-to-be-built semi-detached houses into large retirement bungalows and chalet bungalows and offer owners complimentary membership of the various facilities which includes the golf club, swimming pool, leisure facilities and restaurant.

High quality build

Although priced at an affordable level for their size, these luxury bungalows, as with the other retirement homes now being built in the Wiltshire Leisure Village, are built to a very high standard because Jennifer and Eddy have always employed local companies and bought all materials from within the area.

“Our cost basis is low, not because we cut back on quality, but because we source everything locally which means local companies make money from us rather than some big conglomerate which is only interested in quick turnover and quick profits,” Jennifer explains.

The chalet bungalows measure nearly 3,000 sq feet with ensuite bathrooms in every bedroom. They can also house a small lift for those who may have difficulty accessing the first-floor master bedroom. The smaller bungalows are nearly 2,000 sq feet with two or three ensuite bedrooms.

Jennifer adds: “We are seeing more people; two, three or even four friends or relatives, who live alone as they enter retirement, joining forces and buying a house between them.

“We need to look at new ways of enjoying retirement both with an active lifestyle, freedom of movement, independence, good local facilities and trusted companionship. I believe the last point is probably the most important.’ wilthsire homes

Local Architect Richard Goddard, RIBA, has designed the whole scheme and each individual property. His company, Springfield Design, also designed the construction of the existing hotel, clubhouse, restaurants and leisure centre.

Local builder Grant Passingham of PAS Ltd, is contracted to build the new bungalows as well as the other houses at WLV. His company has worked with architect Richard Goddard ever since the Shahs came to Royal Wootton Bassett.
