A report,\u00a0funded by Audley Retirement Villages\u00a0and Bupa, has found that\u00a0specialist retirement communities\u00a0can\u00a0improve\u00a0people’s quality of life and reduce loneliness and isolation.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0International Longevity Centre (ILC-UK), surveyed\u00a0people living in\u00a0retirement villages that offered extra care\u00a0and found\u00a0that\u00a0they produce\u00a0many social and health benefits, particularly for\u00a0those who move from rural or remote areas.<\/p>\n

For example nearly two thirds of respondents living in retirement villages\u00a0said they weren’t lonely with 81 per cent\u00a0reporting they hardly ever or never felt isolated, compared to those living in the wider community. \"Audley-retirement\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Loneliness is bad for us. As well as having an emotional impact,\u00a0it can also\u00a0affect our physical health;\u00a0such as accelerating\u00a0cognitive decline and even\u00a0increasing the\u00a0risk of dementia.<\/p>\n

Most of those surveyed also\u00a0said they had\u00a0a strong sense of control over their daily lives,\u00a0which was\u00a0over 10 per cent\u00a0higher than those living in the wider community.\u00a0They\u00a0also\u00a0felt secure, with 97 per cent\u00a0agreeing that they felt safe where they lived.<\/p>\n

Communal living commonly found in extra care and retirement villages seems to positive impact on loneliness, with very few respondents to our research saying they felt a high degree of loneliness or isolation.”<\/p>\n
