We arrived at Fawsley Hall on a perfect day.\u00a0The sun was streaming\u00a0over the hills, the sheep were clustered like clouds on the grass,\u00a0and there was a real fire crackling in the Great Hall. By JANE SLADE<\/h3>\n

Fawsley Hall Hotel and Spa is a\u00a0country house\u00a0hotel\u00a010 miles from the market town of Daventry in Northamptonshire. It dates back to Tudor times and still retains many original features\u00a0including\u00a0its own church, a charming grade\u00a0I listed building a short walk across the fields.<\/p>\n

I love hotels like Fawsley, ones that that\u00a0wrap you in another era, surround you in comfy furniture, and provide you with\u00a0a\u00a0bed large enough to accommodate your entire family.<\/p>\n

Having said that Fawsley has all the mod cons you would expect from a member of the Handpicked Hotels Group, including a spa offering a range of treatments, massages and manicures,\u00a0an indoor\u00a0pool, gym with views over the landscaped gardens and a choice of restaurants. \"Fawsley-hall2\"<\/a><\/p>\n

But for me nothing compared\u00a0to\u00a0taking afternoon tea in\u00a0the Tudor Great Hall. If it’s wow factor you are after then this fabulous room with lofty ceilings, huge chandeliers, exposed beams and stone fireplace packs a punch.<\/p>\n

As we settled down to our scones and finger sandwiches I\u00a0gazed at the portraits on the wall and wandered if\u00a0one of the characters might just step out and\u00a0walk over to the roaring hearth.<\/p>\n

Before dinner we explored the gardens,\u00a0walking up and down stone steps,\u00a0admiring the\u00a0topiary yew hedges, oak trees and\u00a0stroking the\u00a0stone balustrades as we threaded our way\u00a0through the narrow paths.<\/p>\n

It was straight out of\u00a0a set\u00a0from a period drama\u00a0–\u00a0I could well imagine one of Jane Austen’s characters arranging a secret\u00a0rendez-vous<\/em> and\u00a0tottering down to the lake giggling girlishly with\u00a0her beau.<\/p>\n

\"Fawsley-Hall6\"<\/a>Our bedroom was grand and spacious enough\u00a0for us to enjoy a glass of champagne before dinner\u00a0and dance a gavotte!<\/p>\n

If you, like me, are likely to\u00a0over-indulge on the scones\u00a0then leave\u00a0as much time as possible between tea and dinner.<\/p>\n

Fine dining is in\u00a0the two rosette Cedar Restaurant housed in the oldest part of the hotel.<\/p>\n

Dark and cosy with stone floors and mullioned windows this is a lovely place to dine \u00e0 deux or with friends. All that was missing was some\u00a0fine porcelain and delicate glassware to go with the fine food.<\/p>\n

The following morning we\u00a0woke to a view of fields and trees and\u00a0the song\u00a0of the blackbirds. No matter what time of year there is always something to enjoy here; the birdlife is rich with house martins, warblers, magpies and jackdaws visiting regularly as well as coots and swans on the lake.<\/p>\n

Apparently Queen Elizabeth\u00a0I came to stay in the 16th century, but\u00a0I don’t suppose she had freshly squeezed orange juice and Tiptree conserves for breakfast. Nor do I imagine she\u00a0experienced the Great Hall at Christmas\u00a0with its\u00a0massive tree, huge candles and lavish decorations.<\/p>\n

For a romantic escape or just an excuse to be pampered\u00a0Fawsley Hall takes some beating but\u00a0if you arrive on a Saturday be prepared for a\u00a0wedding atmosphere. Fawsley Hall is a\u00a0popular venue\u00a0for weddings and newly weds; it’s no secret that Geri Halliwell and her racing driver beau Christian Horner\u00a0spent their wedding night here; well Fawsley\u00a0isn’t that far from Silverstone.<\/p>\n
