A\u00a0recent survey of our residents showed\u00a0that being closer to family was the primary reason behind 43 per cent of our buyers\u2019 purchasing decision, revealing that familial ties obviously shape and influence today\u2019s downsizing patterns.<\/p>\n

Downsizing can be as much an emotional challenge as a logistical one and we frequently hear from children or younger relatives of our customers that although the practical advantages of downsizing are clear, it has been a struggle to help their older relative see that they are making the right decision by choosing to move to a smaller and more practical home.<\/p>\n

Below we have outlined some tips for those trying to help a relative to understand that it might be the time to make the decision to downsize:<\/p>\n

Do the sums<\/h4>\n

The practical and financial benefits of downsizing are, in the vast majority of cases, considerable.<\/p>\n

If your parent or relative is living in a large family house, work out their annual spend on bills per year and compare this to what they would be paying if living in a well-insulated contemporary cottage or apartment.<\/p>\n

Contextualise the saving by thinking about what this money could be spent on instead \u2013 perhaps it could be put towards a special holiday, subscription to a new class or club or an outfit for an upcoming wedding or milestone anniversary.<\/p>\n

In addition to the financial advantages, moving to one of our homes negates the need to fix the faulty plumbing, retile the roof, spend arduous hours maintaining a garden or worry about the growing crack in a ceiling.<\/p>\n
