German navy bride Hildegard Densham looks back on her life fleeing Germany and retiring with Churchill<\/h3>\n

\"\"<\/a>Enjoying life in a retirement apartment on the north-west coast of England is far from Hildegard Densham’s former life. Hildegard lived in West Germany during the Second World War, and at age 16 worked for the German Land Army on the tram service.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was in the land army in Berlin, just before Hitler died,” Hildegard, 91, explains. “I remember so vividly one day, a tram driver asked me where I was from, and when I told him I was from a little town in the west he told me to go back home because the Russians were coming to Potsdam.<\/p>\n

“That night, I grabbed my friend and we escaped out of the bathroom window of where we were living.<\/p>\n

“A few weeks later, the Soviets surrounded the city, Hitler committed suicide and the Berlin Defence Area surrendered to the Soviet Army.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat same year I met my first husband in 1945. I was just 17 years old.<\/p>\n

“He was in the British navy, but he’d been educated in Germany and spoke the language very well.<\/p>\n

“A year later in 1946 he was demobilised and proposed to me the same year.<\/p>\n

“I had to wait a year for permission to come to England, but when I did, we got married one week later and I became a British Citizen just six weeks after that!\u201d<\/p>\n

Hildegard and her husband lived in Crosby, near the River Mersey, where they raised their two sons, until her husband\u2019s untimely death in 1972.<\/p>\n

Hildegard said: \u201cMoving to England was a big change, but the conditions were so much better than they had been in Germany.<\/p>\n

“I learnt the language very quickly. My husband helped me and I used a dictionary to help me get by.<\/p>\n

“So different to nowadays where you can just search the translations on the internet!<\/p>\n

\n

Everything I could\u2019ve hoped and expected from Churchill has happened.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

\u201cIn 1975 I remarried, and my new husband and I moved to Formby, where his parents had lived.<\/p>\n

“Sadly, in 2008 we had a bad car crash and my husband was killed.<\/p>\n

“The car was upside down, it took me three months to recover from my injuries.<\/p>\n

“I lived in our Formby house for nine years by myself, with the odd visit from my sons and my sister who came over from Germany.<\/p>\n

“When my sister died, all alone in her house, it made me think hard about my situation and I realised I didn\u2019t want to be left like her \u2013 dying alone with no one around.\u201d<\/p>\n

In 2017, Hildegard went to a Churchill event with her friend, and was instantly won over.<\/p>\n

She explains: \u201cIn 2017, I decided to sell our house; I wanted to find peace of mind, security and companionship.”\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

“As soon as we had the talk from the Churchill sales team about the new retirement development they were launching I was completely bowled over.<\/p>\n

“Everything just sounded perfect.<\/p>\n

“More than anything, the fact that when I pass away, my son won\u2019t be left with a massive house to renovate and sell gave me such peace of mind.\u201d<\/p>\n

Despite being the oldest owner at the Lodge, Hildegard is one of the most active.<\/p>\n

She said: \u201cI live really close to my son and my grandchildren.<\/p>\n

“They like to keep me young by teaching me how to use all the latest technology.<\/p>\n

“I have an iPhone and an iPad! I also have a lot of German friends in the area and I meet up with them for lunch very often.<\/p>\n

“I\u2019ve made really good friends with my neighbour at the Lodge, she\u2019s great company – we share a patio and both love a gin and tonic!”<\/p>\n
