Their chic food processor, kettle, toaster and saucepans from Cuisinart are all in chrome as is the latest Nespresso coffee machine from John Lewis. “This kitchen has to be timeless – I don’t want things that are going to go out of fashion, or make the kitchen look dated so I haven't chosen any brightly-coloured gadgets,” Teresa adds.

The couple have also invested in quality lighting. They have threaded soft LED light under the units and on the top of cupboards, to give a warm glow; and ceiling spots on dimmers to create the right mood.

“We also had to consider energy costs; which is why we chose these wonderful low-energy LED lights which can transform the kitchen from a lovely bright light space in the mornings to a softer sophisticated setting in the evening.”

New curtains frame the French windows which lead from the dining area onto their garden and for a splash of colour they have replaced the cork notice-board of faded holiday postcards with two beautiful paintings from the award-winning artist Annabel Fairfax. They have also added a retro look with a GPO Carrington telephone (£32) and Steepletone Brighton Radio (£64.50), from QVC.

“We wanted to make the dining area look elegant and separate from the kitchen,” Teresa adds, “Our friends are so impressed they are thinking of doing the same.”

FACTFILE

www.benchmarxjoinery.co.uk Prices from £699 (excl VAT) for eight units; can only be ordered through a builder

www.amtico.com 0121 785 0800 (exhibiting at Grand Designs Live at Excel London 5-13 May granddesignslive.com)

www.silestone.co.uk 01256 761 229; engineered quartz with anti-bacterial protection; counters and worktops from £400 per square metre

www.cuisinart.co.uk 0870 2406902; traditional kettle £60, two-bowl food processor £240, and saucepans £70 each

www.johnlewis.com 08456 049 049

www.miele.co.uk 0845 365 6614

www.qvcuk.com 0800 50 40 30

www.ratedpeople.com for sourcing builders/electricians/plumbers/ and Amtico floor layers

www.leclubtricolore.co.uk 020 7924 4649

www.annabelfairfax.com 07850 152393 [/fancy_list]

[17
40
7250,689,85,10933,3459,7251,7252,7254,7257,4152,7260,1363,10657,10939,5864,7256,4026,7261,7249,7253
post-407","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-home-improvements","tag-home-improvements-2
"publishpress_future_workflow_manual_trigger":
["GET
