{"id":48447,"date":"2021-05-26T12:06:44","date_gmt":"2021-05-26T11:06:44","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/newclone.retiremove.co.uk\/blog\/?p=48447"},"modified":"2023-01-03T15:36:34","modified_gmt":"2023-01-03T15:36:34","slug":"pets-arent-a-barrier-to-living-in-a-retirement-development","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newclone.retiremove.co.uk\/blog\/pets-arent-a-barrier-to-living-in-a-retirement-development\/","title":{"rendered":"Pets aren\u2019t a barrier to living in a retirement development"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[et_pb_section fb_built=&#8221;1&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.4.8&#8243;][et_pb_row _builder_version=&#8221;4.4.8&#8243;][et_pb_column type=&#8221;4_4&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.4.8&#8243;][et_pb_text admin_label=&#8221;Text&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;4.9.4&#8243; hover_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243; sticky_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243;]<\/p>\n<h3>The Covid-19 pandemic has seen a huge rise in pet ownership and the good news is that most retirement developments will welcome four-legged friends<\/h3>\n<p>Last year the Kennel Club saw a 180 per cent increase in enquiries from potential dog owners and pet insurance providers noted a 78 per cent increase in people registering new pets in the week before the first UK lockdown.<\/p>\n<p>As a nation of pet lovers older people can be concerned that they won\u2019t be able to take their pet if they want to move to a retirement development.<\/p>\n<p>But that\u2019s not necessarily the case if they choose to move to Girlings property.<\/p>\n<p>Jamie Turnbull, Business Director at Girlings Retirement Rentals assures, \u201cIt\u2019s a myth that you can&#8217;t bring your pet if you rent a home in a retirement development.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We have many properties in developments where pets are allowed and many of our residents have dogs and cats.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We understand that having a pet as a companion is good for wellbeing.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Dogs also need walking so people benefit physically from taking daily walks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe expect to see growing demand from retirees who have pets in the next few years.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Moving to a retirement development can bring many benefits such as being part of a sociable community and no longer having to worry about ongoing property maintenance.<\/p>\n<p>If people have pets, we encourage them to get in touch and we can advise them which properties would be most suitable.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_48498\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\" style=\"width: 478px;\">\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/newclone.retiremove.co.uk\/blog\/?attachment_id=48498\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-48498\" src=\"http:\/\/newclone.retiremove.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Avril-.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"468\" height=\"468\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-48498\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-48498\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Avril Sweeney and her dog<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>One Girlings resident who had two dogs when she moved in is Avril Sweeney.<\/p>\n<p>She moved into her retirement apartment in Poplar Court in Lytham St Annes in Lancashire five years ago.<\/p>\n<p>She came across the development while visiting friends there. She thought it could be a good place for her and dogs as it had French doors opening onto an outdoor seating area, and was only five minutes walk from the seafront.<\/p>\n<p>Avril enquired about the apartment and asked if her dogs would be allowed.<\/p>\n<p>They were so she moved in.<\/p>\n<p>An unexpected benefit for Avril was the security of the development.<\/p>\n<p>She was still working at the time and while she was at work, she felt reassured that her apartment and her dogs were safe.<\/p>\n<p>She knew if anyone came to her home who wasn\u2019t invited, someone would notice.<\/p>\n<p>Last year Avril retired so she has been able to benefit much more from the life a retirement community can offer.<\/p>\n<p>She explains, \u201cI really enjoy the social side of living here which I wasn\u2019t thinking about when I moved in five years ago.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Retiring from work can mean worrying about how to fill your days but there\u2019s so much going on, it\u2019s made that transition much easier. My days are so full I don\u2019t know how I ever had time to work!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Avril adds, \u201cI don\u2019t understand why you\u2019d want to live alone in a three-bedroom house with all those rooms to clean and heat when you could move into a lovely apartment like mine.
