{"id":48470,"date":"2021-05-25T10:14:19","date_gmt":"2021-05-25T09:14:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/newclone.retiremove.co.uk\/blog\/?p=48470"},"modified":"2023-01-03T15:36:34","modified_gmt":"2023-01-03T15:36:34","slug":"mccarthy-stone-calls-for-action-to-end-ageism","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/newclone.retiremove.co.uk\/blog\/mccarthy-stone-calls-for-action-to-end-ageism\/","title":{"rendered":"McCarthy Stone calls for action to end ageism"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>[et_pb_section fb_built=&#8221;1&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.4.8&#8243;][et_pb_row _builder_version=&#8221;4.4.8&#8243;][et_pb_column type=&#8221;4_4&#8243; _builder_version=&#8221;4.4.8&#8243;][et_pb_text _builder_version=&#8221;4.9.4&#8243;]<\/p>\n<h3>New research reveals 60 per cent of people in the UK feel ageism is a major problem<\/h3>\n<p>McCarthy Stone\u2019s new <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mccarthystone.co.uk\/vision-report\/?utm_source=retiremove&amp;utm_medium=organic_post&amp;utm_campaign=retiremove\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Vision for Later Life in Britain report<\/a> suggests that over three million people have been the victims of ageism.<\/p>\n<p>With the consequences including prejudice and dehumanization, McCarthy Stone is calling for immediate action to solve this age-old problem.<\/p>\n<p>The research analyses the UK\u2019s attitudes to, and experience of, ageing, based on a poll of 5,000 adults and in-depth interviews with experts and older people.<\/p>\n<p>The report discovers that ageism \u2013 which includes negative stereotypes and pejorative terms such as \u2018pensioners\u2019, \u2018old fogey\u2019 and \u2018codger\u2019 \u2013 is fuelling misconceptions about later life.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/newclone.retiremove.co.uk\/blog\/?attachment_id=48475\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-48475 alignleft \" src=\"http:\/\/newclone.retiremove.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/health3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"405\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a>Over a third of people believe this is having a negative impact on mental health.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Perception versus reality<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>43 per cent of people surveyed under the age 65 fear they\u2019ll be regarded as frail and somehow less important in older age.<\/p>\n<p>51 per cent said they actually feel more confident and resilient.<\/p>\n<p>John Tonkiss, CEO of McCarthy Stone, said: \u201cOur report shows the UK is blighted by ageist attitudes.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We have the chance to create a society in which later life is filled with joy, happiness and purpose, and we are calling on government and society to make positive changes to establish Britain as the best place in which to live and grow old.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>McCarthy Stone wants the Government to make policy changes to help tackle the country\u2019s ageist culture:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Increasing workplace opportunities, through the introduction of <strong>mandatory Age Gap reporting<\/strong> across all UK businesses and <strong>a \u2018Kickstart\u2019 scheme to incentivise hiring older generations<\/strong> into the workforce<\/li>\n<li>Increasing representation of older communities in Westminster, with a dedicated <strong>Minister for Older People<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Dedicated commitment to preventative health and social care for older people, including having the <strong>government publish its long-awaited Social Care White Paper <\/strong>and getting the <strong>NHS to deliver a \u2018Now, Not Later\u2019 strategy of preventative healthcare<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Using technology to foster intergenerational connectivity and understanding, with <strong>a technology and AI fund<\/strong> to develop innovations that bring multiple generations together, and <strong>digital education programmes and training<\/strong> to increase access to technology in later life<\/li>\n<li>Unlocking purpose and value from later life, with local authorities and community volunteering groups creating <strong>a volunteer army of one million more older people<\/strong> to support society, building on the three million older people who already regularly volunteer<\/li>\n<li>Driving fairer representation of older people in the media, with a <strong>media manifesto<\/strong> for the press to commit to promote more balanced coverage<\/li>\n<li>Improving the accessibility standards of new homes specifically for the ageing population.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mccarthystone.co.uk\/vision-report\/?utm_source=retiremove&amp;utm_medium=organic_post&amp;utm_campaign=retiremove&amp;utm_content=retiremove_blog_article_May_2021\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Download the report <\/a>And have your say!
