Joan and Bill moved to The Chimes in Cheadle, Greater Manchester, in December 2019.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe don\u2019t have any worries. I have an apartment with a lovely garden in front of it which the gardener comes and manages but I can put my little cyclamen bulbs in.<\/p>\n
“We go around dead-heading, but we haven\u2019t got that major responsibility anymore. You can back off if you don\u2019t feel like it today, you haven\u2019t got to do it and that\u2019s lovely.<\/p>\n
“When our friends are still digging away and the weeds are still growing, we\u2019ve got our Josh who comes and takes up all the weeds or blows the leaves away. That\u2019s brilliant!<\/p>\n
\u201cWe felt we were short of snowdrops this Spring, so we planted some. We can do things like that. I say to Josh \u2018I\u2019ve got these cuttings, they\u2019re rooted, where can I put them?\u2019 and he will pop them in for me or show me where there\u2019s a space.<\/p>\n
“It\u2019s great fun and I haven\u2019t got the overall responsibility of the garden, so it\u2019s just a superb arrangement. The gardens are lovely here.\u201d<\/p>\n
Less maintenance, more \u2018me time\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n Eddie and Mabel<\/p><\/div>\n When Eddie and Mabel moved to The Bridges in Macclesfield, Cheshire, they looked forward to spending a bit less time and energy on house and garden maintenance.<\/p>\n Eddie explains: \u201cOnce we decided, we realised the benefits of not maintaining a house because I\u2019ve spent my life maintaining everything. We\u2019ve always been DIY people and once we\u2019d taken the dog for a walk, we\u2019d set about doing a job.\u201d<\/p>\n Mabel added: \u201cThe gardens are beautiful here. We had a lovely garden and I will miss it, but I also knew that when this year came, I probably couldn\u2019t go on doing it.<\/p>\n “Now, I feel like a lady of leisure \u2013 being waited on and not having to do a lot. We\u2019ve got so much more leisure time to do what we want to do.\u201d<\/p>\n \u2018The Good Life\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n At The Cottons in Ramsbottom, Greater Manchester, a group of homeowners are enjoying \u2018The Good Life\u2019 as members of a new gardening club.<\/p>\n Alexandra Johnson, Sales and Marketing Director for Adlington Retirement Living, said: \u201cSome homeowners have planted flowers, and some are growing herbs, fruit and vegetables.<\/p>\n “The produce they\u2019ve been sharing with each other includes strawberries, runner beans, lettuces, rhubarb, cabbage and chard.<\/p>\n “One homeowner even shared some seedlings from his swede with members of our on-site team so they can grow them at home.\u201d<\/p>\n Margaret, a member of the gardening club, added, \u201cI have always enjoyed gardening, but my previous garden became too much for me. Now I have a small plot on the raised beds which I can manage easily.<\/p>\n “This gives me an interest, some exercise and gets me outside meeting other like-minded people, and of course we enjoy the end product such as peas, beans, carrots, potatoes and beetroot.\u201d<\/p>\n Enjoying the social side of the gardens<\/strong><\/p>\n Nigel and his daughter, Maria<\/p><\/div>\n Nigel moved to Jacobs Gate in Sheffield in December. \u201cI brought a couple of corkscrew hazel plants with me, which really look very nice,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n His daughter, Maria, is impressed with the gardens: \u201cThe landscaping here is infinitely nicer than anything we\u2019ve seen elsewhere.<\/p>\n “The variety of plants in the garden and the space outside looks very appealing. It\u2019s a real sun trap too.<\/p>\n \u201cDad and the other homeowners have been able to go and sit outside for coffee. When he lived at his old house he would never sit in the garden, but he\u2019s been sitting outside all the time here.<\/p>\n “You ring up and he\u2019s not in.
