I was particularly excited when I learned it was first a &#8216;Ragged School&#8217; which is representative of a fascinating moment in British history \u2013 when it was decided all children needed to have access to education, something we take for granted today. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\">&#8220;This space has always been about nurturing and healing, and the restoration honours the building&#8217;s past, ensuring that the spirit of compassion and community endures.&#8221;<\/span><span class=\"eop\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\">Restored to preserve its historical essence while integrating modern comforts and creating a space that honours its past and looks forward to the future, KYN Hurlingham will continue the tradition by enriching the lives of the home\u2019s future residents, with unparalleled care.<\/span><span class=\"eop\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\">Records show that Laurence Sulivan, son of Anglo-Irish politician Laurence Sulivan MP, commissioned the building of what was then called The Elizabethan School, in memory of his wife Elizabeth, sister of Prime Minister Lord Palmerston. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\">A philanthropic venture, the beautiful building was a \u2018Ragged School\u2019 \u2013 a free school for destitute children. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\">Later it evolved into an Open-Air School for children with tuberculosis in 1920, before being re-invented again as the Eight Feathers Youth Club in 1963.\u00a0<\/span><span class=\"eop\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Now, after a meticulous and sympathetic restoration, KYN Hurlingham honours this rich legacy by continuing to enrich the lives of its residents, blending history with modern comforts.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/newclone.retiremove.co.uk\/blog\/fulham-landmark-reopens-continuing-its-legacy-of-care\/kynhurlingham_screeningroom_landscape\/\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-65021\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-65021\" src=\"http:\/\/newclone.retiremove.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/KYNHurlingham_ScreeningRoom_Landscape.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1200\" height=\"801\" srcset=\"http:\/\/newclone.retiremove.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/KYNHurlingham_ScreeningRoom_Landscape.jpg 1200w, http:\/\/newclone.retiremove.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/KYNHurlingham_ScreeningRoom_Landscape-980x654.jpg 980w, http:\/\/newclone.retiremove.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/07\/KYNHurlingham_ScreeningRoom_Landscape-480x320.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) and (max-width: 980px) 980px, (min-width: 981px) 1200px, 100vw\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\">KYN has spent two years sympathetically restoring the notable Grade II building, employing leading British designer Nina Campbell refining its interiors which include artwork selected by renowned curator Adam Ellis.\u202f<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\">As well as honouring the heritage building and maintaining as many of the original features as possible, Nina has incorporated contemporary prints from her own collection as well as classic British designs from Lewis and Wood and William Morris to modernise the feel of the building\u2019s interior. <\/span><span class=\"eop\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\">&#8220;The renovation of KYN Hurlingham has been a delicate balance of preserving its historic character while introducing modern comforts,&#8221; she said. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\">&#8220;We have respected the original features, enhancing them with beautiful interiors that offer both style and functionality. Transforming this historic building into a stylish and comfortable home for KYN residents has been a rewarding journey.
